The Challenge

The Challenge

NatureScot promotes and protects Scotland's wildlife and habitats.

The Scottish Government funded organisation plays a crucial role in making sure Scotland's natural landscapes are used sustainably. So future generations continue to enjoy them.

But a legacy of old, siloed digital systems led to unproductive work practices. These systems created a fragmented digital workplace that made it difficult for employees to:

  • Quickly find relevant content and complete daily tasks

  • Share timely news and business critical updates across the business

  • Support flexible, agile working and organisational change

The Scottish Government advocated the use of open standards across public sector services. So NatureScot wanted an open, flexible digital workplace that could address its challenges and drive smarter work practices.

But with limited budget and staffing, NatureScot decided SharePoint was not the right solution for its needs.

The organisation assessed solutions against its needs and selected Atrium, an open-source platform. The Drupal platform simplifies the task of building complex intranets, extranets, and community portals.

What we did

What we did

NatureScot was drawn to our confidence and expertise with Drupal. And our focus on objectives-driven, purposeful digital products.

Our partnership centred around three key phases:

  • Discovery workshops with key stakeholders to align on the strategic goals. This defined how we should prioritise and inform our decisions. And how to measure success.

  • Developing a digital workplace based on Atrium. And customising the Drupal platform to support NatureScot's needs.

  • Systems integration to unify NatureScot's disparate systems and data sources. This was key to creating a superior user experience.

We also introduced NatureScot to Agile working practices. As NatureScot comms officer, Martin Stubbs-Partridge, explains:

'Agile was completely new to the organisation. 'We now use Kanban practices across our teams. The benefits of working with Inviqa reach far beyond the original scope of the project'.

The Results

The Results

NatureScot now has a digital workplace that supports innovation and efficient working practices.

Highlights include:

  • 250% rise in dwell time compared with the old system

  • 9,600 visits in the first week

  • 16 minutes average dwell time

  • 50% rise in visits to the internal information library

  • 4.5 page views per session

  • 85% compliance with mandatory reading, versus 30% previously

The new workplace puts its users front and centre. It lets NatureScot staff complete daily tasks easily, work efficiently, and digitally connect with each other.

Employees benefit from:

  • A user-friendly homepage that makes it easy to find organisation-wide content. News and featured articles are prominent. An information library makes it easy to find key content using search and filters.

  • A staff directory that makes it easy to connect with colleagues. Employees can find a specific person by name, department, location, or skill.

  • Authentication and authorisation that connects the right people with the right information.

NatureScot and Inviqa were recognised at the Step Two 11th Annual Intranet and Digital Workplace Awards for their 'outstanding contribution to the fields of intranets and digital workplaces'.
