MyJobMatcher.com, part of the Opinio Group, is an online job matching platform that finds career opportunities for candidates based on content from their uploaded CVs.
MyJobMatcher.com’s intelligent matching system was already attracting millions of job seekers, but was quickly reaching performance capacity. MyJobMatcher.com engaged Inviqa to help it break free of its legacy systems and build a scalable platform that could support its continuous and rapid growth.
Its legacy platform had left MyJobMatcher.com in a compromising position. The business wanted to build on its growth in the UK and expand into the US, but was stuck with a system that couldn’t sufficiently support even its domestic users.
The system needed to:
- be flexible and scalable to accommodate for its growing user base
- be able to search and match job adverts to user searches
- break MyJobMatcher.com free of its technical debt
- enable MyJobMatcher.com to take ownership of the Intellectual Property of the system
After a thorough Discovery with all of MyJobMatcher.com stakeholders involved in the project, it was agreed that Inviqa would build a replica of the third party system using Symfony2, which would enable the business to not only have complete ownership of its technical assets, but also scale for future growth.
Freeing technical debt
An eight-strong team from Inviqa and four from Opinio Group developed a bespoke Symfony2 platform to efficiently support a sophisticated search algorithm that would match job seekers with relevant opportunities out of the 800,000 advertised at any one time.
One of the barriers to the old platform was the hefty development resource required to make changes to the system. The Inviqa team introduced a much more Agile approach to development, working in iterative sprints. To lift the weight of resource requirements, the team built the platform so that future features could be added with ease.
Search functionality is the keystone of the MyJobMatcher.com platform; only with the algorithm can relevant jobs be identified for users based on their resumé content. As the implementation required complex customisation, Inviqa introduced Flax, UK-based search experts, to the project. Together with Flax we integrated enhanced search functionality into the Symfony2 platform, which allows users to use keywords to return the most relevant jobs for them.
In September 2014, Inviqa handed over the platform to MyJobMatcher.com's internal creative team to build a new contemporary branded design. Two months later, the site went live to its 6.5 million unique users.
The new platform now matches job seekers and career opportunities more than 10 times faster than the old system, and has helped increase traffic delivery by over 80 per cent.
The new platform has helped increase traffic delivery by over 80 per cent.
For users, the increased search functionality helps deliver more relevant job opportunities directly to their inbox, while the business, now free of the shackles of its old technology, has a scalable platform that that can rapidly expanded its capabilities.
MyJobMatcher.com can now launch new features to market much more quickly, and by using an industry standard platform, can bring new developers on board much more easily. Using Symfony, an open source framework, also gives its developers the support of the wider Symfony community at any time.
The art to any business growth online is scalability, reliability and the ability to satisfy your user requirements at all times.
says Arran Stewart, CTO at MyJobMatcher.com
Since launching our V2 version constructed by Inviqa we have a versatile system that will not only grow with us, but actually helps us grow.
Inviqa introduced process to our business and enabled us to look at projects in a different way. Their business driven development is the way forward when it comes to development. ‘Paring back’ and with a less is more approach, Inviqa delivered us robust scalable tech, which was exactly what our business needed. It is always nice dealing with experts as a business owner as the relationship forms a parnership rather than client/supplier, meaning you can rest easy knowing the project is in their stewardship and they care about it as much as you do.
